About Us

History
Kingfisher Kindergarten was first established back in 1992, originally in a scout hut in Woodley, by two ladies called Judy and Beverley. It then moved to Dunsden a few years later. Many years later, in 2008 it was taken over by a lady called Anita. It was then saved from closure and taken over by Carla and Anne in 2016, who also facilitated the move from Dunsden to Chiltern Edge in Sonning Common, where we still are today. In late 2018, the business was taken over by La-Ryne van der Westhuizen and we also moved across the site to a new building.
Day to Day Running
At Kingfisher we follow a free-flow system using ‘planning in the moment' whereby we set an enabling environment and we encourage the children to explore and learn by their own interests. This approach to learning results in the children having higher levels of involvement and being engaged for longer periods of time rather than adult-led activities.
However, we still believe that the children should be involved in celebration activities, story and group times, music and P.E. sessions in order to prepare them for school so these will be included in our daily and weekly routines. In addition to this, as a very basic introduction to phonics, we will also have a 'sound of the week’ (using the Jolly Phonics scheme) where the children will learn a sound through a fun song and be made aware of its associated letter.
Throughout the day, all the staff observe and interact with the children and look out for teachable moments in which they can make a difference. Every week, we have three focus children and the observations/interactions made by the staff are then recorded in the children's Learning Journeys.
We are very proud of what we have achieved with our setting. We understand that choosing the right setting for your child is one of the most important decisions you will make.
Our enthusiastic team, with tons of extensive knowledge, provide a fun and friendly atmosphere for your child to learn and grow.
Please do get in touch if you'd like to come and visit our setting and meet our team.
